Tue 17th Sep – Mixed emotions

Today was a day of mixed emotions, the sobering sights and sounds of Pearl Harbor mixed with the joys of shopping!

We had already booked online sometime ago for the first tour at 8am for the Arizona Memorial and had to be at Pearl Harbor by 7.  Rose at 5.30, out the door by 6, arrived by 6.35 (we were allowing for traffic and wrong turns!), joined the already forming queue.  Arriving early did give us the benefit of parking right outside the entrance and of having only about 15 people ahead of us in the queue.

By the time they were letting people in at 7am there would have been 300 plus people in the queue.  Crazy.  Although many of them were on tours, or did not have pre-purchased tickets for the Arizona Memorial tour so needed to be there early to secure them.

We had booked a days passport so that gave us entry to the memorial, with guided audio, entry to the Mighty Mo, Aviation Museum, Bowfin submarine and museum.  A real boys day!

We used our time between 7 and 8 to do the audio tour around the grounds, only problem was the skies opened up, rained heavy, Q was worried about the camera getting wet (no not about me!) so I rushed to the book store and got us two of those lovely plastic macs and a plastic bag for the camera.  Arrived back to where Q was hunkering under cover and the rain stopped.  Typical.

Time to see the movie of the attack and then head to the memorial.  Not much that one can say about all this other than it is pretty sobering and pretty emotional.  All those what if’s.  What if the fleet hadn’t all been there, what if the US hadn’t stopped selling oil to the Japanese, what if everything wasn’t anchored side by side, what if when the planes were first seen on radar the alarm was raised rather than thinking it was their own planes, what if….

Getting back from the memorial the skies were once again black and a light shower started, by the time we had got from the boat to cover it was bucketing down, and for the first time I was feeling cold.  Only lasted a few minutes but looked like it was going to threaten off and on for the day.  Q headed back to the car for our rain jackets, yes we had them in there all along, not only would they look nicer than the plastic macs they would protect us, oh and the camera more!

From here we headed by shuttle to the Mighty Mo, did the guided tour and then explored the rest of the ship.  Was really interesting to think we stood in the same place that the Japanese signed the surrender documents to end WWII.

After lots of walking up and down hideously small and steep ladders we headed back to the shuttle and on to the Pacific Aviation Museum, every boys dream, not so much every girls.

As soon as we arrived Q was look at that look at this, I was “where are the shops”.  To be fair the size of some of these things were amazing, the helicopters especially so.  It was now lunch time, shared some fries and a brownie and then headed back to Pearl Harbor for the Bowfin tour.  I wasn’t too keen on this one as I find submarines pretty cramped and I get a bit claustrophic.  But being the trooper I am I went.  To make it more bearable I listened to the children’s audio version of the tour rather than the adults.  Much more fun!

After a quick trip to the museum it was time to leave and head to near by Pearl Ridge shopping centre.  A rather large mall that consists of updown and downtown and is joined by a monorail.  Oh and had a dive store Q wanted to go to.  After doing the top layer of the updown mall we headed downtown where the dive shop was, which happened to be next to Longs Drugs and by now I had the headache from hell, a combination of not enough water, those small spaces, the cold and then the heat etc.  I got drugs, he didn’t get the mask he wanted because it wasn’t at that store, it was at the other one, the one we hadn’t gone to.

Still feeling tired and not in the mood for shopping (we had been on our feet for over 6 hours now and a lot of it standing in one spot at a time), I suggested we head to the movies, a chance to sit down, cool down and relax and it just so happened we were right next to the movie theatre and The Family a movie we had seen advertised on TV was due to start in 15 mins. Perfect.  Even better it only cost us $12 for the two of us.  The movie was funny and brutal all at once.  It had Robert  De Niro, Tommy Lee Jones and Michelle Pfeiffer in it.  A nice way to spend a couple of hours and gave me renewed vigour for shopping!

Didn’t buy too much, Q bought a belt and some dive gloves, I bought a top, a new cover for my phone, the best ever suitcase, handbag, bracelet and some sneakers.  Actually when you type it out like that it was one or two things.  Oh and we bought some chocolate…surprising I know.  We passed by See Candies, well actually we didn’t pass it, Q suggested (yes he, not me) that we go inside.  As soon as we got in the door they were asking if we wanted to try something and if so what.  I tried the raspberry cream chocolate and Q a caramel one.  They actually gave you the whole chocolate to try, so we had half each and then swapped!  It worked because we bought some and then as we were leaving they gave us another whole one each, this time pineapple to try.  Yum.

Getting hungry as by now it was late and we had only had the fries and brownie for lunch, so just got asian at the food court.

It was now about 7.30ish, Best Buys was close by and I was looking for a new laptop, we headed off.  This should have been very simple, out of the parking lot, on to the main highway, turn left and then left again and there was Best Buys.  However the GPS didn’t want us to turn left into the parking lot of Big Buys and wanted us to do this big loop around the block.  Problem was, it was dark, we hadn’t seen Best Buys across the road and we were now in some dark back alley.  Decided to give it a miss, did the big loop to get back on to the freeway and there was Best Buys, stopped, bought my new laptop.  I really wanted the orange one but they didn’t stock it and there was no guarantees it would get to us before we left, so boring silver is what I ended up with, which Q was happier with!  So now I will look for a sleeve in bright orange for it.  It is gorgeous, touch screen, can swivel the screen so it looks like a tablet, small, light and half what I would have paid if I could even get it at home.  Sexy!

Then time to come home, finally arrived back some time after 9.  A long day!

Monday 16th – Sunrise to sunset

Up at 4am, out of the house by 4.30, arrive at the Honolulu Zoo parking lot before pick up time of 5.10am.  Take about 10 minutes to work out how to use the pay machine, things are pretty dark at that hour, thank goodness for our torch!

Picked up by Alex from Ohau Photography Tours a pretty laid back surfer type of guy, there are 5 others on the tour.  A couple from Perth, a couple from Atlanta and a girl from NZ.  We head to a beach (too early in the morning have forgotten the name now!) to wait for the sunrise and to take photos.  Really lovely, a nice breeze from the tradewinds keeping it cool.  Some fabulous photos and on to our next location.

This was a great way to get to see some of the lower part of the island.  We stopped at Makapu’u Lighthouse, a really pretty spot, didn’t do the hike just in the parking lot (phew!).  Alex would suggest settings and ideas for framing pictures.

From here headed down to the beach area by the park, then to Waimanalo Bay a stunning beach with no one else on it, mind you it was still before 8am!  From here we headed in land to look at the mountains in the hope that the sun would peek through the clouds and cast light on the mountains, it didn’t.  The mountains were pretty amazing as they have all these deep ridges down them.  The ridges are made by water.  When it rains heavily the water pours down the mountains creating these ridges.  It apparently looks quite spectacular in the rain as there is hundreds of waterfalls cascading down the sides.

Stop at a little general store in Waimanalo (which by the way is in the neck of the woods that we are staying in Kailua) for breakfast.  Very yummy egg and bacon muffin for me, waffles for Q.  Then on towards the city where we go to a little park that has a waterfall for some more pictures.  Then back into the van and back to the zoo.  Feels as if we have been awake for 12 hours but it is only just gone 10.30am.

We had paid for parking until 12.30, the zoo is very close to Waikiki so we decided to take a walk get a cold drink and Q could get his first glimpse of the madness that is Waikiki.  Passed a Cold Stone creamy shop, yay, early, but still time for ice-cream, help cool us down as by now it is scorching.  Damn, don’t open until 11am, still 15 minutes to go.  Cross to the other side so Q can view the beach, the Royal Hawaiian in the distance, slowly go to the next block, head back, arrive at Cold Stone at 10.55am, sit wait, it opens, we cool down.  Bliss, time to head back to the car.

Head home to Kailua, dip in the pool, which to Q’s amusement I found freezing, he found wonderfully refreshing.  I dipped then sat in the sun, he relaxed.

Head down to Kailua town, look around the shops, all pretty high end, have a late lunch, early dinner as it is now 3pm.  Pizza at Californian Kitchen, with yummy peach lemonade.  Not fizzy lemonade, but the old fashioned home made.  They had Strawberry, raspberry, mango and peach.  I asked our waitress which was the best flavour, she said peach, so I tried it, it was!

By the time we get home it is after 5, relax a little, get everything ready for tomorrows early start.  Heat up left over pizza for dinner, go to bed.  *sigh* long but good day.

Sunday 15th – Too much, too little

A rather stressful day!  Awoke early as usual, our flight wasn’t until 1.18pm, however were up early and ready to go so decided we might as well head to the airport when we were ready especially given we weren’t sure how long it would take to drop off the car, check in etc

A random Dinosaur sculpture on the drive down to the airport.

Car took all of 2 mins to drop off, shuttle to airport took less, queues at check in about 20 mins, it was hot, hot, hot.  The airport was all open air (other than a roof in various areas) so no air con!

When we finally got to check in with our 3 bags, one was over weight by 8lbs (about 3.5kgs) and one was very light so we were told to take stuff out of the heavy bag and put it in the light one.  Nothing like opening your suitcase in the middle of the check in area with all your intimates on top quickly trying to scramble to take stuff out because there are 20 people and 90 suitcases behind you all waiting to check in!

First attempt we had only taken out 5lbs so had to take some more stuff.  Finally got it sorted, got checked in and were on our way to security.  Only problem was Q had pinged his back again so was a bit slow with moving.  Me being the martyr I am insisted I take his backpack and he could take my carry on as it was much lighter.  His backpack weighed all of the 11kg you were allowed, bl00dy heavy it is fair to say.

Once through security still no air conditioning, still open plan, and getting hotter by the minute.  Decided to head to the restaurant surly that would be air conditioned, no it wasn’t.  *sigh*  Still it was lunch time now so we may as well eat.  Q had the most delectable (NOT) looking cheese nachos. All they were was a bunch of nachos on a plate with that bright orange cheese squirted on top.  Yes literally squirted, from a big pump bottle thing.  Ugh.  I played it safe with the grilled cheese sandwich, $7 thank you for two pieces of dry bread, bright yellow cheese slice in the middle, which was so plastic it didn’t even melt and took 20 minutes to prepare.  Still it was food.

Flight was uneventful.  Got ourselves and our luggage onto the shuttle and to the rental car location.  Had a compact car ordered just like the big island.  In the big island we had a Hyundai Elantra, on Ohau we were given a Kia Soul which looked like a box, was pretty small and even though the rental car company advertised it as being able to fit 3 pieces of luggage in the trunk and 5 passengers we could only fit one case, and the trunk was not a trunk but just a space in the back of the car so no security.

By now we were hot, tired and had enough, we thought about swapping out the car but the line for car pick up had grown to about 20 people and with each rental taking about 10-20 minutes there was no way.  So we headed to our new home in Kailua to regroup and for me to ring the rental car company to see what the cost would be to upgrade.

After unpacking and cooling down a little we decided to head back to the airport and swap our vehicle.  With no real boot this one was going to be a problem for us, as the thefts from cars over here are chronic and being able to shut things in a proper trunk where people couldn’t see them was going to be important to us.

Luckily no queue at the rental car company so it should have been quick right?  Wrong!  Explain the situation, then get taken to the other counter, explain the situation again, (oh because as well as being given this tiny car we had also been charged $80 for services and insurance we had said we didn’t want!), explain the situation a 2nd and a 3rd time to the same lady.  If only she would have shut up and actually listened to our problem!  Get told we have to return the car for them to reverse the extra charges so we need to go over there and return it.  Do that, and tell the man exactly what they had told us, he tells us he cant do that go back and see the manager.

Go back to the lady and say he cant do XYZ all he can do is ABC.  Oh ABC is all I need you to do.  Argh, temperatures boiling at this stage.  Then she tells us she doesn’t have any mid size cars in stock all they have is large and that will be an extra $38 a day.  Forget it.  Then she says I have this car, we ask to see it so we can check out the trunk.  She offers it to us for only $10 more a day.  It is a luxury car, the trunk is the size of a rugby field let along the length of the car, no fun to drive, going to guzzle gas and wont fit in the allotted parking spot at the house.  No thanks.

Oh, I have nothing for you then, only another Kia.  Really?  Somehow from the walk out to see the luxury car and the walk back into the office another compact car mysteriously appears.  This time a Chevrolet Aveo, a car with a trunk.  Okay it is a few years old, a bit battered and bruised but it doesn’t look like a cube and it has a trunk and it isn’t costing us extra.  We’ll take it thanks.

Phew…back home, navigating the freeway’s which even with the GPS can be a nightmare when you are driving under other freeways, because the stupid GPS thinks you are on the freeway above so starts giving you directions to go north instead of south.

*sigh* all in all a stressful day.  McDonalds for dinner, ugh, but couldn’t find anything else, are tired now and have to be up at 4am.

Sat 14th – A nice day for a drive

Today is our last day on the Big Island so we just took it easy.  No early starts (although we still managed to wake at 6.30am!), no rush to be anywhere at any time.

We headed of sometime after 9 to North Kohala and this time managed to find the Macadamia Nut Factory on the way.  Lots of samples, some with very odd flavours, such as SPAM flavoured Macadamia nuts,  neither of us were game to try those!  We bought some nuts and then headed on to look at the galleries of North Kohala.

There were lots of lovely art galleries with some amazing jewellery, wood products, I found lots I wanted that was either too big to take home, too expensive or my husband wouldn’t buy it for me.

Today wasn’t quite as hot as the last few days, also we were in a higher altitude so it was cooler.  If you can call high 20’s cooler.

We headed down to Waimea for lunch via the mountain road.  It was a complete contrast to the coastal route and was very much like driving along a country road at home, except that we were 3000ft above sea level.  From here we were able to look down towards our resort.

We went back to Village Burgers for our lunch, just because I wanted another one of their strawberry milkshakes, which are really yummy thick shakes made with fresh strawberries.  This time Q got one to so at least I didn’t have to share.

From here we headed back to the resort, the long way.  My fault, we weren’t using the GPS and I told Q to go right instead of left.  It was on purpose of course as this took us inland along the base of Mauna Kea, where it was very cloudy and very wet.  Had to get the car washed some way!

Lazy afternoon with a swim and then packing of bags.  Tomorrow we head to Oahu.

Fri 13th – What a cutie

No, I don’t mean my husband.  We headed back to Kahalu’u Beach Park and arrived earlier this time at about 8.50am.  No problem getting a park or a spot under the shade today!  I got chatting to a couple that were probably in their 70s.  They were well set up with their beach chairs under the shade of one of the only trees.  They were from San Diego, had been to Australia and NZ a couple of times, with NZ being one of their favourite places in the world.  I would have chatted to them for longer they were a lovely couple but someone was getting impatient to get in the water.

As soon as we hopped in and before we had even put our fins on we came across a turtle, in the shallows, probably only a couple of feet deep.  Today was a bit more of a workout than our previous visit as it was high tide.  Our earlier start did however mean a lot less people in the water (although by the time we got out a couple of hours later there was peak traffic in the water!).

Once again lots of pretty fish, Q managed to spot an octopus but he disappeared before he could even say “calamari”, and I saw the cutest little fish ever.  Luckily Quentin managed to get lots of photos of it.

After our swim we were starving and headed off to Patz Pies for Pizza.  It was new york style pizza, huge in size, lovely thin crust, really yummy.  Really interesting restaurant, quite young staff except for the owner who was a bit of a card.  He was on the phone to his mum while we were there, having quite a loud personal conversation about business.  Then he came to chat to us about the talk with his mum and how she had made eggplant parmigiana for her neighbour who had broken her wrist.  The place had a great vibe and at the tables they had a whole lot of trivial pursuit cards so Q and I sat there asking each other questions.  Says it all about our relationship, he chose Science and Nature, I choose Entertainment!

Then back to the resort (about an hour drive) for icecream.  I had kept looking at these mochi icecream ball thingys and decided I wanted to try them.  They were icecream inside a sticky rice coating.   The smallest portion was 3 balls, so I got white chocolate with raspberry, cantaloupe, and passionfruit.  It is fair to say the ice-cream inside was really yummy, I could give or take the coating.  Q had a dragon fruit sorbet which was really yummy.

Lazy afternoon by the pool.  This is the first opportunity I have had to sit and relax by the pool.  Probably because it is the first day there were a few clouds and a bit of a breeze so the sun wasn’t as burning hot as it has been!

Lazy night, with left over pizza for dinner.  *sigh* Life is good.
